Award Criteria

Architectural Excellence

Corner Cast Inc. designed, engineered, manufactured & installed a two-story office complex made from 12 recycled shipping containers. This project required a thoughtful integration of architectural elements to achieve both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Spatial efficiency and functionality were provided by using shipping containers as the building blocks of this project. Each container was designated for specific functions, promoting an organized and efficient layout for offices, meeting rooms, communal spaces and other amenities required for this modern office complex. The seamless integration of shipping containers into a two story complex maximized the available space optimizing the footprint of the building.

Technical Innovation & Sustainability

With the client requiring a modern office complex, we designed each container to create fluidity between work rooms and communal spaces. This vertical integration on two stories was dictated by the available ground space. Utilizing energy-efficient technologies, such as smart lighting systems, air exchangers & heat pumps and high-performance glazing, reflected a commitment to reducing the building's environmental impact. Designing with natural light and ventilation in mind further minimized the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. This complex was designed to be 100% removable at the end of the project life cycle, enabling the customer to have a zero footprint on site when the offices were no longer required. By using a smart connection system both structurally and architecturally and a screw pile foundation the units can easily be relocated and reused, which for the client was extremely interesting as a sustainable long term solution to their operations.

Cost Effectiveness

The use of shipping containers as modular building blocks inherently lends itself to significant cost savings, in particularly production time and time on site. Container modules can be prefabricated off-site, reducing construction time and labor costs. This efficiency is particularly advantageous in the context of an office complex, where a quick turnaround time is often desirable and parallel construction saved time and capital. By building on 2 floors we reduced the need for a larger foundation and by using shipping containers we were able to use a screw pile foundation which provided cost savings for the client compared to a conventional concrete foundation.
