Event Phishing & Pirate Scams

The 2026 World of Modular, taking place April 20–23, 2026 at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, will bring together thousands of leaders from the commercial modular construction industry. As the industry’s largest global gathering, it is also a prime target for phishing and housing pirate scams.

Attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors should remain alert and rely exclusively on official Modular Building Institute communications for housing, registration, and sponsorship information. Staying informed helps protect your business, your data, and your World of Modular experience.

Phishing and Pirate Scams: What World of Modular Attendees Need to Know

Phishing and pirate scams are a growing threat for attendees, exhibitors, and sponsors of large in-person conferences and trade shows. These scams commonly target registered participants with fake hotel offers, fraudulent attendee lists, and deceptive emails designed to steal personal or financial information. As major events return at full scale, scam activity has increased sharply across industries.

Housing pirate scams are among the most common. These fraudulent operators pose as official housing/hotel providers and contact attendees by email or phone, offering discounted hotel rates or claiming access to exclusive room blocks. In reality, they have no affiliation with World of Modular or the Bellagio Hotel & Casino, our host venue. Providing credit card details often leads to unauthorized charges, cancelled reservations, or no room at all upon arrival. Legitimate conferences only manage housing through verified booking portals and do not cold-call attendees to sell hotel rooms.

Phishing scams use emails that appear to come from event organizers, sponsors, or partners. These messages often copy logos, branding, and event language to look legitimate. Contact information is typically scraped from public websites, exhibitor listings, or social media. Red flags include unfamiliar sender domains, urgent payment requests, and offers to sell attendee or exhibitor lists — which reputable events do not distribute for sale.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Only book hotels through official event links

  • Verify sender email domains carefully (look for the @modular.org domain)

  • Do not purchase attendee lists from third parties

  • Save and report suspicious emails or calls to MBI (contact events@modular.org with all details)

  • Never share credit card or personal details with unsolicited contacts
