Boldt, Bildt and HGA Team to Deliver Unique Hybrid Modular Hospital and Clinic for Aspirus Health
Combining volumetric modular and traditional construction will expand local emergency and inpatient care months sooner
The Boldt Company (Boldt) and its sister company, Bildt, a prefabrication and modular supplier, along with leaders from Aspirus Health, celebrated the groundbreaking for Aspirus’ new hospital and clinic in Chippewa Falls, Wis. on Thursday, August 14.
The new hospital comes as the region has faced severe health care gaps following the closure of two major area hospitals in 2024, mirroring rural health challenges felt throughout much of the country. To help bring essential care services online faster, Boldt, the project’s general contractor, and Bildt, along with architectural and engineering firm HGA, teamed to design a unique hybrid modular and traditional construction approach to the facility.
Integrating volumetric modular construction for the emergency department and clinic portions of the hospital will allow for up to 30% of the facility to be constructed offsite at Bildt’s Oshkosh, Wis. fabrication facility. As a result, the hospital is slated to open up to three months sooner than even an aggressive traditional construction schedule would allow.
Boldt, Bildt and HGA have partnered previously on numerous permanent modular hospital installations throughout the country, including an inpatient addition at Fairview Health Services’ St. John’s Hospital in nearby Maplewood, Minn. in 2024.
“We know how vital these services are to the Chippewa Falls community, said Jason Krueger, vice president and general manager of Boldt, the general contractor for the new hospital. “By leveraging Bildt’s modular expertise, we’re helping Aspirus bring this essential hospital online quickly so patients can start accessing these services sooner.”
Measuring approximately 35,000-square-feet, the facility’s first phase will deliver an emergency department with 10 treatment rooms, 10 inpatient beds, an on-site clinic with 12 treatment rooms, imaging services (X-ray and CT), laboratory services, and a pharmacy.
“We’re thrilled to expand and elevate local care while boosting the local economy,” said Jason Troxell, Aspirus Wisconsin Northwest Region President. “We welcome the chance to connect with our neighbors as we heal people, promote health, and strengthen communities.”
The estimated completion date of Aspirus Chippewa Falls Hospital and Clinic is September 2026.
