"Taking Stock!
How May We Help You?"
The President's Message
March 2002
by Laurie Robert |
In March of 2001, the Modular Building
Institute (MBI) launched the first issue of Commercial Modular Construction
(CMC) magazine. I had the pleasure then of welcoming you to explore the world
of modular building through this new medium.
As we release our fifth issue, it seems evident from the increasing number of
inquiries and comments the MBI has been receiving, that CMC is becoming a
valuable resource tool to many, and an important conduit between our readers
and the members of this building industry.
But that is our impression. As our reader, we would like your feedback. Tell us
what you want to know about our industry and we'll make sure you get the
information you need.
A trade association for twenty years, the MBI has been dedicated to promoting
the industry, and to the education of its members, keeping them apprised of the
latest information in construction trends, technology, and issues through
newsletters, meetings, and its website. But now, as publisher of CMC, the MBI
has established a more comprehensive means of communication--one that brings
industry members, news, and technology directly to the desks of the
far-reaching markets we serve.
We are continually striving to broaden our readership base, build up our
research, and increase the scope of feature articles, and so it crossed my mind
that perhaps now is a perfect time to examine and take stock of the
effectiveness of our communication efforts. To check our alignment, so to
speak, and to see if the information we are passing along is what you, the
reader, would like to receive. To do this, we need to compare some thoughts.
We'll go first . . .
When you open any issue of CMC, there are at least four things you should
always discover.
Ideas, Ideas, Ideas
Just about everything begins with an idea. Inventions, technology, progress,
and improvements are all a result of a conceptual impression of how things
could or should be. Although modular construction has been a relatively small
segment of the multi-billion dollar construction market over the past few
decades, unquestionably, a part of its future growth will come from facility
planners, architects, and owners like you, thumbing through a publication like
this, thinking, "Hmm, I had no idea . . . !"
If an issue of CMC generates one fresh thought, a new and innovative approach
to an age-old problem, introduces you to a unique product or service, or if you
read about a building design or design-build application you did not think was
possible, then you got our message.
Information
Information forms the groundwork
necessary to set an idea in motion. Whether we are reporting on methods and
materials, building products and services, regulatory issues, new design
techniques, or environmental and IAQ issues, CMC aims to keep you up-to-date
throughout the year.
Understandably, all of the information you might need to make your decisions
about modular construction will not be contained in every issue. However, a
means of accessing the facts you need will be. As more and more member
companies participate in the issues through case studies, articles, and
advertisements, you will be able to broaden your search for data. If you are
still unable to find what you are looking for, simply call or email the Modular
Building Institute, publisher of Commercial Modular Construction, for further
information or assistance.
Applications
Probably one of the most significant means of conveying the capabilities of
modular construction today is through project summaries and case studies.
Reports such as these can serve as points of reference for facility planners,
architects, and owners when considering the design aspects of their projects.
Through application articles, the advancements of modular construction methods
and materials today become so much more apparent.
Contacts
In every issue of CMC, you can expect
to find any number of industry related companies who offer more information
about their products and services through the advertising medium. And once a
year, CMC dedicates a specific issue as a "Buyers Guide" to help you find
whatever or whomever you might be searching for throughout the US, Canada, and
even around the world. Alternatively, you can simply log on to the MBI website
at <www.mbinet.org> for assistance.
Each year, the MBI fields a greater number of inquiries about modular
construction. The goal of CMC magazine is to help answer those questions
through the sharing of ideas, information, applications and to give you
contacts in the industry.
Now It's Your Turn . . .
Tell us what you think about our publication. Have we communicated effectively
with our four key objectives? What would you like to see in future issues? Your
feedback is very important!
