Missions & History
The MBI Educational Foundation (MBIEF) is the only organization established specifically to provide educational opportunities in the form of training and scholarships to individuals with an interest in commercial modular construction. The Foundation began in 2001 with the generous US$100,000 gift of Barry & Mary Gossett. Mr. Gossett is an industry veteran, member of the MBI Hall of Fame, recipient of the MBI Outstanding Achievement Award, and esteemed friend to many. Since 2001, the Foundation has trained over 1,000 industry professionals through its popular “Essentials of Commercial Modular Construction” educational series, begun intensive development of a modular buildings installation certificate program, awarded student scholarships and has spear-headed valuable industry research.
The MBI Canadian Foundation (MBICF) Mission: To expand opportunities, increase awareness and foster growth in the off-site construction industry, by supporting research and development, providing scholarships for students and developing partnerships and alliances with other complimentary interests. MBICF was approved by the Canada Revenue Agency in January 2011.

Making a Difference
The MBI Member Scholarship: Annually, the Foundation provides a scholarship to one employee of an MBI member company or an employee spouse, child, or grandchild. MBI members apply directly to the Foundation and must be enrolling in a two- or four-year institution. To apply for this year's gift, simply complete an application and return it to MBI by July 15th. The current amount of the scholarship is US$2500.
The MBI Educational Foundation Student Design Competition: In 2007, MBI introduced the industry’s first-ever annual modular building design competition for architectural and engineering students at four-year colleges or universities. For MBI's contests, students submit conceptual modular buildings that meet eight specific criteria. In 2009, MBIEF partnered with the AIA Student Chapter Association (AIAS) and awarded prize money to winning students for their designs of a hotel on Miami Beach. Winning entries can be viewed here. MBIEF plans to continue partnering with AIAS for future student design competitions.
University Based Research: MBI, through the MBIEF and MBICF, is partnering with the University of Alberta Hole School of Engineering on a new Industrialized Building Construction Program. This program will provide research quantifying the reduced environmental impact, improved worker safety, and reduction in overall construction schedule of off-site construction compared to conventional construction. The program is being led by Dr. Mohammed Al-Hussein. For more information, click here.
