Ball State Student Wins
Green Modular Building Design Competition

Charlottesville, VA - The Modular Building Institute is pleased to announce the first place winner of its student green building design competition, a part of the annual MBI Awards of Distinction contest for manufacturers and dealers of commercial modular buildings.

Tyler Stanley is a senior at Ball State University's school of architecture. Winning first place means Stanley will receive a $2500 scholarship while Ball State will receive a $5000 grant. Honorable mention goes to Derick Lee, a student at California Polytechnic State University. Both students will receive crystal trophies and formal recognition at MBI's World of Modular, March 28-31, 2009 at Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Architecture and engineering students at four-year colleges or universities may participate in the competition by submitting designs for modular buildings that meet eight specific criteria: thermal comfort, indoor air quality, daylighting, acoustics, energy efficiency, resource strategy, architectural excellence, and economic practicality. The 2009 competition included a real-world client, Piedmont Housing Alliance. PHA is working to improve The Meadows, a senior community located in Crozet, Virginia. The Meadows provides low income housing and is in need of a new community center. Each participating student designed a community center utilizing modular construction and having sustainable features, including the ability to attain LEED certification.

Contest judges included Robert J. Kobet, AIA, LEED AP, president, Sustainaissance International, Inc.; Peter Doo, AIA, LEED AP, president, Baltimore Chapter, American Institute of Architects; Ralph Tavares, PE & Silvana Tavares, AIA, principals, R&S Tavares Associates, Inc.; James Guthrie, AIA, president, Jobsite Mobile Offices; and Stu Armstrong, executive director, Piedmont Housing Alliance.

"In this our third such competition, we have seen students submit truly innovative, exciting, and thoughtful designs for commercial modular buildings. Tyler Stanley and Derick Lee are to be commended for demonstrating with their winning entries the value of what may be the most environmentally responsible form of construction on our planet," said MBI executive director Tom Hardiman.
